Die Hauptstadt des Free States, Bloemfontein, liegt auf etwa 1.395 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und ist Sitz des Obersten Gerichtshofes Südafrikas.
Die Stadt ist auch Geburtsort des bekannten Schriftstellers J.R.R. Tolkien, der unter anderem "Der Herr der Ringe" geschrieben hat.
