N1 Highway

accommodation, activities...

The most important highway of South Africa links up Cape Town with many major towns of the country and leads you directly into Zimbabwe. Major towns along this road are

  • Cape Town and Beaufort West in the Western Cape Province
  • Colesberg in the Northern Cape, known as the halfway house for travelers from Cape Town to Gauteng
  • Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State
  • Johannesburg and Pretoria in Gauteng
  • Polokwane, Makhado and Musina in the Limpopo Province

Worcester
This town was founded in 1820 as an outpost of the Cape colony. Nowadays the Worcester area is also known for its fine wines. Travelers to the Western Cape can leave the N2 at Worcester and travel via Robertson and Montagu into the semi desert of the Little Karoo.

Matjesfontein
This picturesque little village is situated just off the N1 almost halfway between Cape Town (240km) and Beaufort West (220km).
Matjesfontein was known as a famous health resort due to its warm and dry climate. Today even the luxurious trains Rovos Rail and Blue Train stop here for a city tour.
The history of Matjiesfontein is linked with the Scotsman James Douglas Logan. He eventually wanted to travel to Australia in 1877 but left his ship in Cape Town and started to work for South African railways. He fell in love with the country and the spot he liked most was the area known as Matjiesfontein. He started to buy several farms in the area and founded a farm himself. To build up Matjesfontein he imported amongst others streetlights from London. A windmil was set up for the production of electricity. His house must have been the first in South Africa that was connected to ecectricity. As his farm had enormous sources of underground water he was able to supply it to the whole town and thus generated a good income. As James Douglas Logan was convinced about the marvellous climate of Matjiesfontein he started to build up the infrastructure for a health resort. Later on the town became known as a wellness oasis of wealthy South Africans and many visitors from overseas.
The Hotel is still operating and the victorian charme of the town has been preserved. Visitors can also enjoy an interesting museum.
