Table Mountain from Company's GardenCape Town, a short introduction

accommodation, activities...

This town situated along the shores of Table Bay was given many terms like "mother city", "taverns of the Sea", "Gateway to Africa" and "Jewel of the South".

It was here where the European history of the country began. In 1652 the Dutch trader Jan van Riebeeck landed in Table Bay and started a halfway house to provide food and fresh water for sailors on the way from Europe to the far East. Saldanha Bay farther North was the first choice to start a "colony" but due to the lack of fresh water van Riebeeck decided to start his new venture at Table Bay.

Through the centuries Cape Town developed into a bustling metropolis. Due to the scenic beauty Cape Town ranks amongst the most beautiful towns in the world.

12 Apostels from Camps BayThe breathtaking scenery of the town and its surroundings can be enjoyed from several viewpoints. Have a sun-downer on Signal Hill and see the night covering the town in darkness. From here you can overlook the whole town as well as Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles. Do it like the locals and bring a bottle of champagne.

The more energetic will enjoy a hike on top of Table Mountain or Lion’s Head. Due to the constantly changing weather you should better take a local guide.

The first wine estate started by the Dutch can still be visited: Groot Constantia.

To start your discovery of Cape Town a sightseeing tour with "Cape Town City Tour" in a double-storey coach is highly recommended. The tour starts at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and includes the City Centre as well as some nice view points.
