George and the Outeniqua Pass

accommodation, activities...

George
The old oaks in York Street are the only remnants of the past in this modern town.
George is the biggest town in the area. It was founded in 1811. The George Museum gives you an interesting insight into forestry which always was the backbone of the local industry. It was mainly here along the Garden Route where fine wood for furniture (Yellowwood and Stinkwood) was produced. These trees are also cultivated nowadays.
George is known for its fine golf courses. The 36-hole course at Fancourt is one of the most attractive in the whole of South Africa. George is only a few kilometres away from the Indian Ocean.
The small seaside resorts of Harolds and Victoria Bay in the vicinity offer majestic beaches that most tourists don’t know of.

Outeniqua Pass
The N12 links up George with Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. On your way to the semi desert you have to climb up scenic Outeniqua Pass.
