Somerset West & Vergelegen
The attractive town of Somerset West at the foothill of the majestic Helderberg mountain range is a famous gateway to the Winelands from the N2 (False Bay). Just out of town right at the Hottentots Hollands Berge lies Vergelegen Estate. This wine estate was founded by governor Simon van der Stel in 1685 as an outpost of the Dutch East India Company.
Vergelegen wine estate offers the most beautiful Cape Dutch buildings. Just outside the old manor house you can wander through a park with some more than 300 years old camphor trees. Today Vergelegen is owned by Anglo American Farms Limited.
While visiting the Somerset West area don't forget Sir Lowry's Pass (17km out of town, along the N2). Take a stop at the viewpoint and enjoy panoramic views over the False Bay and the Cape Peninsula.

Helderberg Nature Reserve
The entrance of the Helderberg Nature Reserve is close to Vergelegen. It is famous for the typical flora of the Cape, the Fynbos. The reserve contains parts of the Helderberg and is 400 ha in extent. The highest point is Westpeak, 1003 m above sea level.
To explore this beautiful reserve you can choose between short walks or longer hikes (for example to Dias George). Enjoy magnificent views over the False Bay, to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Town.
Helderberg Nature Reserve is also home of the Bontebok and a lot of smaller animals.
Near the entrance (a fee has to be paid) there is a picnic area, the information centre with a shop and a restaurant (Duck Inn).
Members of the Rotary Club of Somerset West have had the idea that a nature reserve will benefit not only the community. They started to raise money and in 1960 the Helderberg Nature Reserve was established. Today a Cooperation of the Helderberg Conservation Forum and the Helderberg Friends commit a lot of energy to keep this small reserve alive.
