Stellenbosch

accommodation, activities...

…is the second oldest town in South Africa and the capital of the wine producing areas in the Western Cape. The second governor of the Cape colony Simon van der Stel founded the town in 1679 on the banks of the Eerste Revier. The University of Stellenbosch (Afrikaans) ranks amongst the best in the country.
Stellenbosch is known for its oak allies and its historic buildings. The city centre can easily be discovered on foot. Enjoy nice cafés, shops and restaurants.

  • The Village Museum displays the life of the early settlers.
  • Oom Samie se Winkel (Dorp Street), a shop that is very famous with tourists, offers groceries and lovely souvenirs. You can also pop in for snacks.
  • Explore the Dorp Street with many historical buildings (national monuments) and the old oak trees.
  • The Moederkerk in the Ryneveld Street was built in neo-gothic architectural style and is unique in this region. From here the town developed.
  • In the centre of Stellenbosch is a huge place, called the Braak. In former years it was the location for parades. Nowadays it is a market square and close by is the minibus terminal.
  • At the edge of the place there is VOC Kruithuis, the former storeroom for gunpowder of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Today it is home to the Military Museum.
  • There are some more museums, for example the South African Jewish, the Toy & Miniature, the Wijnland Auto or the University Museum.
  • Close to the centre you will find the Botanical Garden, the oldest garden of a South African university and the small Jan Marais Nature Reserve.
  • The Stellenbosch Wine Route gathers some well known wine estates and offer delicious wines. The Brandy distilleries in the surroundings of Stellenbosch are worse while a visit as well.
  • Golfers can choose between several excellent golf courses nearby.
  • Next to town you can explore Protea Heights on the farm Devon Valley. This park is 25 ha in extent and is home to a variety of plants and birds.
  • You are also able to do a lot of outdoor activities, for example the Vineyard Hiking Trail, horse trails etc.

More info you can be obtained in the tourism information office in Market Street.

Close to Stellenbosch you are welcome to enjoy Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.
