Victoria
Falls
"the smoke that thunders"
accommodation, activities...
Width of the falls:
1.688m
Height
ca. 100 m, highest point 108 m
Five main falls
from West to East:
1 Devil's Cataract,
2 Main Falls,
3 Horseshoe Falls,
4 Rainbow Falls,
5 Eastern Cataract
The early inhabitants of this area named the falls "mosi
oa tunya" which means "the smoke that thunders". The British
missionary and discoverer David Livingstone was the first
European to see this spectacular sight in November 1855. He was
totally overwhelmed and named this natural wonder after Queen
Victoria.
The Falls can be discovered from Zimbabwe and Zambia.
There are nature reserves on both sides, entrance fees have to be paid.
It's worth to check both countries for the overall impression. In
Zimbabwe you'll walk along the narrow gorge parallel to the falls.
Enjoy magnificent views all the way. Especially towards the end of the
rainy season the Zambezi carries masses of water. The disadvantage is
that you have to walk through the spray. So don't forget to carry a
rain jacket! Nevertheless the spectacle and the noice of the falls is
overwhelming. In October and November not much water is left. This is
the time when you can enjoy the whole geology of the area.
While staying at the Falls don't forget to walk on Victoria Bridge.
There are more spectacular views of the Falls and the narrow gorge
where Zambesi river continues to flow. For the more energetic bungee
jumping from the bridge is also on offer. If you intend to check the
bridge and walk to neighbouring Zambia you have to carry your
passport and you should check up with your hosts about the latest
regulations. Make sure that you don't have to pay visa fees
again on the way back!
To make your experience of the Falls a complete one don't forget to
book a sunset cruise on Zambesi river! Enjoy the sun going down
while game viewing and sipping a Gin & Tonic, Africa colonial style!
Not to be missed is also high tea at Victoria Falls Hotel.
This should be undertaken on the last afternoon at the falls. The
service is outstanding and you'll have a last view to the bridge and
the falls!
Numerous activities are on offer like bungee jumping, wildwater
rafting, sunset cruises etc. And what about a flight over this natural
wonder? It's up to you to choose between a microlight, a helicopter or
Fixed Wing...
Accommodation is plentiful in the area. Most places charge US
Dollars.
