Keetmanshoop
The laid-back centre of Southern Namibia is situated about 500 km South of the capital Windhoek. The town started as a mission station (Rheinische Mission) that was founded in 1866. The trader Johann Keetman after whom the place was named spent some money in the development of the town.
A fort was built in 1894 and in 1908 the railway line to Luederitz was finished. In Keetmanshoop some colonial style houses can still be found.
Southern Namibia is known for its arid climate. Therefore mostly sheep is being farmed. Karakul furs are still the backbone of the agricultural products.

Quiver Tree Forest & Giant's Playground
Only 25 km outside Keetmanshoop a forest of Quiver trees (a tree aloe species) can be visited on Gariganus farm. This species is endemic to the arid areas inside and outside the Namib desert. The San used the bark of the branches to carry their arrows. The Quiver tree forest is famous for its atmosphere at dusk.
Close to the forest you can enjoy an awesome rock formation: Giant's Playground.
