A little bit of history...
The Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama was the first European to discover the coastline of KwaZulu-Natal. As this happened during Christmas in the year of 1497 this part of Southern Africa was named Natal (Portuguese for birth or Christmas). The sailors believed they found a lagoon at the mouth of a huge river and therefore called present day Durban Rio de Natal (Christmas river). The lagoon however was a bay suitable for ships to enter.
Many years later Henry Francis Fynn started a settlement at this bay. In 1835 the little town was named Durban after the governor of the Cape colony Sir Benjamin D’Urban.
KwaZulu-Natal is the home of the Zulu people. This tribe developed from a smaller community during the reign of Shaka and Dingane into the biggest tribe of South Africa.
