The City Centre

The British fled into the Old Fort in 1842 when the battle against the Boers seemed to be lost. Dick King (Richard Philip King, a young soldier, who rode on his horse to Grahamstown -950km in 10 days!) saved his countrymen by bringing reinforcement.
The Workshop is an attractive shopping area in an old railway station.
The impressive City Hall is situated close to the Old Station (Tourist Information). The Natural Science Museum and Durban Art Gallery are based in the city hall.
Natal Bay houses the biggest harbour of the country. Also many private yachts are anchored there. The restaurants nearby are known for their seafood!
The harbour itself covers an area of 2000ha and is known as one of the major trading posts for sugar in the world. Boat cruises offer you an insight into this world of its own (book at Pleasure Cruise Terminal). Da Gama Clock near the harbour remembers the discovery of Durban by the Portuguese sailors in 1497. The statue of Dick King is close by. Some historical ships can be admired at Maritime Museum. The biggest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, Juma Mosque, is in Broad Street.
The Indian Market or Victoria Street market offers exotic shopping delights. Just opposite lies the hall for spices and souvenirs.

The Golden Mile
The promenade along the shores of the Indian Ocean is named The Golden Mile. This is where most of the hotels and the entertainment can be found. There are plenty of parking areas in then Northern part of The Golden Mile. From there you can explore the beach life.
Durban is famous for its rickshaws. Sir Marshall Campell introduced them to South Africa. These colourful vehicles and their beautifully dressed owners are still a popular attraction.
Waterworld offers fountains, swimming pools and slides. Children like this place and also those that are fond of water in general.  
The main attractions however are the beaches. They are ideal for swimming and surfing. Lifeguards are watching the scenery. Even the sharks like the coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The beaches however are shark-protected.
Take a tour to Minitown and watch the small version of Durban from a cable car. Close to this place the Snake Park as well as the Seaworld Aquarium want to be explored. The latest attraction "Ushaka" is still under construction.
