Townships
More and more visitors to South Africa would like to visit one of the townships that still remember the apartheid history of the country. Soweto, or the South-Western-Townships, has a lot to offer. A guided tour is highly recommended. Soweto is a town of its own. To get closer you should stay in a guesthouse and intermix with your hosts. You can also visit other townships like Alexandra or Temba (Tshwane).

History and more
Until 1886 only few people lived in the highveld of present day Johannesburg. The cold winters and the sour grass were not ideal for farming. This changed overnight when George Harrison, a labourer who worked some time on Langlaagte farm, discovered the Golden Reef while prospecting in his leisure. A huge gold rush followed his discovery and the town of Johannesburg was laid out. Within only a few years Johannesburg became the biggest town in the country and the industrial hub of the region. Johannesburg was not planned for eternity. The streets are quite narrow and there are very few historical buildings. It is the biggest town in the world without natural waterways. In former days water had to be provided by ox-wagons. Since some years a huge water project with Lesotho has been started.
