The
Midlands in KwaZulu-Natal are characterised by intensive
farming. The closer you get to the ocean the more sugar cane is
cultivated.
Midlands-Escarpment
The Valley of 1.000 Hills,
a traditional residential area of the Zulu, reaches from the
hinterland of Durban towards Harburg in the Midlands.
Around Harburg some breathtaking views down the Midlands
Escarpment can be enjoyed. Most view points are on private farms
and offer canyon-like sceneries down to the Zulu Kraals.
Kranskop view point
Near Kranskop a fantastic view down to the valley of the
Tugela river can be enjoyed.
Wartburg,
Harburg...
 The little village
of Wartburg was named
after the castle in Germany where Martin Luther translated the
bible into German. The first settlers were Voortrekkers that soon left
after their arrival in 1838.
In 1850 some Germans, cotton farmers from New Germany, came and
started the village again. All German settlements in the Midlands
origin from the Hermannsburg mission near Greytown.
Today the main agricultural product is sugar cane.
Around Harburg some breathtaking views down the Midlands
Escarpment can be enjoyed. Most view points are on private farms
and offer canyon-like sceneries down to the Zulu Kraals.
A little private game reserve offers excellent game viewing near
Wartburg. Albert Falls Dam, a recreation area, is also
close by.
Hermannsburg
Ludwig Harms started
Hermannsburg Mission
in 1854. A small museum where the whole venture started can be visited
by prior arrangement.
Hermannsburg is famous in the whole country for its excellent
boarding school. |
