Pietermaritzburg
Pietermaritzburg was founded by the Voortrekkers and is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. It offers some historical buildings and a variety of museums.

Howick
Howick Falls is another famous attraction of this area. Close to the waterfall some souvenir shops and restaurants can be found. From Howick R 617 leads you to the Southern Drakensberg (Underberg and Himeville).

Albert Falls Dam
Close to Wartburg you will find a recreation area, the Albert Falls Dam Nature Reserve.

Sugar cane and cotton
The early settlers in the Midlands grew cotton. In 1850 Edmund Morwood started to grow sugar cane in Natal. The first sugar mill was built.
As sugar cane was grown successfully more and more farmers changed to this crop. Due to a lack of man power on the farms Indian labourers were brought to South Africa. The first boat carrying 341 Indians reached Durban in November 1860. The Indians got a contract. They had to work on the sugar cane fields for five years before they were allowed to return. Most Indians didn’t make use of the free ticket back to India. They stayed in South Africa and most of them started a business in and around Durban. Today approximately half a million Indians are living in the Durban area.
