National Road N 11, Botshabelo open air museum

This road leads you from Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal via Ermelo, Middelburg and Potgietersrus to the border with Botswana.

The open air museum Botshabelo
From the town of Middelburg (Mpumalanga) take the N11 towards Groblersdal. After a few kilometers you'll see the entrance gate of Botshabelo on the left.
Botshabelo is an old mission station. Hans Merensky, a famous South African geologist, was born here. On the huge property you'll find a variety of old buildings - a church, a museum and amongst others a tea garden. A bit off the beaten track Fort Merensky can be visited. The main attraction however is the Ndebele open air museum. Here you can visit traditionally dressed Ndebele people in their colourful houses, painted in typical geometrical forms. Ndebele handicrafts can be purchased.
The whole mission station is surrounded by a game reserve. On your way from the main entrance you might even spot some antelopes! Botshabelo is a perfect stop for travellers on their way towards Gauteng on the N4 or N11.
