accommodation, activities...

The B 1
This is the most important highway in Namibia linking up the hub of the South, Keetmanshoop, with the capital, Windhoek. It makes it way further North to the border with Angola.

North of Windhoek

Okahandja
This town lies some 55km North of Windhoek. Two giant woodcarving markets are a famous tourist attraction. 25km outside town are the hot springs of Gross Barmen. Enjoy a bath in the thermal springs. In Okahandja you can also join B2 for your way to the coastal town of Swakopmund.
Okahandja is also known as the Herero capital. The former chiefs Tjamuaha Maherero, Samuel Maherero and Friedrich Maherero are buried here. On the last Sunday in August a huge celebration to remember the late leaders takes place. The Herero women will then wear their huge victorian dresses whereas the men prefer a uniform.

South of Windhoek

Rehoboth
The historical town of Rehoboth lies approximately 85 km south of Windhoek.
Hermanus van Wyk, the leader of a group of basters from South Africa, settled at the hot springs and founded the town of Rehoboth in 1870. The basters are descendants of the Nama people and Dutch settlers. The museum records the history of the basters.
Close to town the Oanob Dam offers picnic places and a beautiful gorge. You can also visit the
Reho Spa Recreation Resort (bookings Namibia Wildlife Resorts)

Mariental & Hardap Dam
About 260km South of Windhoek you'll come across Mariental. Only a few kilometers off the town the Hardap Dam, the biggest of its kind in the country, can be explored. A worth-while detour for water enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The first white settlers named this town after his wife Maria. East of Mariental starts the Kalahari desert known for its red sand. To the West you'll reach Maltahoehe on your way to Sossusvlei.
