B2,
Karibib, Usakos, Spitzkoppe
accommodation, activities...
The
B2
is the main raod from Okahandja to the coastal towns of Swakopmund and
Walvis Bay.
Karibib - place of the „Gari
Plant“ (Moraea species)
Since 1900 Karibib was
another railway station on the way from Swakopmund into the interior.
The little town started on Otto Halbich’s farm. In 1902 a mission
station was founded in Karibib and slowly the town developed into an
agricultural centre with mining facilities. Close to the town Sydney Pieters found fine jewels (Tourmaline) that were looked after
throughout the world. The marble found in the area is also know for
its high quality. Karibib is also known for its production of
medicinal plants (devil’s claw).
Usakos
The small town of
Usakos situated in the Khan river valley at the edge of the
Namib desert is known for its hot climate. The Europeans
transformed the Nama expression “!Us!Khos” into Usakos (most probably
this name goes back to a fountain named "touch the forehead"). The
town started as a railway station on the way from Swakopmund
into the interior. In 1948 Usakos became a municipality.
West of Usakos,
approximately 170 km from Swakopmund,
an impressive landmark can be seen, the "Spitzkoppe"
(1829 m). This mountain range is part of the
Erongo mountains
(place of water in the centre of…). Many San paintings can be found
here. The highest peak of the Erongo
mountains is the Blockberg
with an altitude of 2350 m.
The Spitzkoppe
restcamp is also part of the NACOBTA
initiative and offers hikes, guided walks to rock paintings, rides in
a donkey cart and accommodation in basic bungalows or on a camping
site.
Philipps cave
(named after the previous owner Emil Philipp) is famous for the rock
painting called white elephant. |
