Visitors to the
Sossusvlei can travel in their own car.
 Only
the last 5 km need a
4x4, shuttles are offered. In the Sossusvlei area the
highest sand dunes
in the world can be found. It’s a fascinating fairytale of sand in
bright red and orange colours.
During
a good rainy season the
river Tsauchab is flowing into the vlei. Even birds from the
coast are flocking into the area. Antelopes like Oryx and
Springboks as well as ostriches can be seen throughout the year. During a
drought they can feed on the sparse vegetation along the little
rivulets.
The Death Vlei can also be
discovered on foot. Here the sand dunes stopped the access of water
from the Tsauchab river.
Sesriem Canyon
West of the Naukluft
Mountains the river Tsauchab is plunging into a narrow gorge, the
Sesriem Canyon. The waterholes in the riverbed are attractive to many
birds and other animals. A hike through the riverbed is highly
recommended
 Naukluft
The
Naukluft lies Northwest of Maltahoehe on the road to
Swakopmund. It consists of a mountainous plateau and the edge of
the desert itself. It’s a hiker’s paradise and the home of the
Mountain Zebra as well as many other animals.
The alternative raod from Windhoek to Swakopmund via
Gamsberg
Pass
is highly recommended.
