 Windhoek,
Namibias capital
accommodation, activities...
Windhoek,
the capital of Namibia, is situated 1654m above sea level in the
Khomas region. It is the economical and cultural centre of the
country. Approximately 230.000 people (about 15% of the total
population) are living within the city boundaries. There are still
many buildings that reminds one of the German colonial history. The
pedestrian precinct is famous for shopping.
The town of Windhoek was founded by the Nama Chief Jonker
Afrikaner who settled there around 1840. He named this place Winterhoek
remembering his birthplace in the Cape.
In 1842 the German missionaries Hans Kleinschmidt and Carl
Hahn erected a school
and the first church.
The city centre can be discovered easily on foot. Some monuments still
remember the tension between the indigenous roots of the country and
its European-influenced history.
