Duivelskloof...
The little town of Duivelskloof is known for its lush subtropical vegetation. Duivelskloof means something like "Devil's gorge" and goes back to the old days when the pioneers had a hard time to reach this place in wet (muddy) weather. This is a high rainfall area.
Close by is the realm of Queen
Modjadji.

Big Baobab
Just outside Duivelskloof along the road to Modjadji you can visit a giant baobab tree at Sunland Nursery. This tree must be several thousand years old and has a circumference of almost 50m. It looks, as if two trees are growing next to each other although it is supposed to be only one tree. A bar has been built in the hollow trunk. If would like to check on the bar, an entrance fee has to be paid.

The former mission station „Medingen“
Close to Duivelskloof/Modjadji you'll come across the former mission station Medingen. This mission was started in 1880 by Fritz Reuter with money given by the German "baroness von Meding".

Lady Sarah Heckford
In the late 19th century the Letaba District was an area for pioneers. One of the most famous early settlers was Lady Sarah Heckford. She became famous throughout the country and beyond as "the lady trader".
Lady Sarah was born in Ireland. She used to live in London and became the wife of a renowned doctor. After the death of her husband she left the English society for a more adventurous life in Africa. She did transport riding to the gold fields and settled next to rain queen Modjadji in order to trade with the
Bolo
vedu people. The history of Sarah Heckford and her family is strongly connected with Modjadji.
