accommodation, activities...

N1 Highway
The most important highway of South Africa links up Cape Town with many major towns of the country and leads you directly into Zimbabwe. Major towns along this road are

  • Cape Town and Beaufort West in the Western Cape Province
  • Colesberg in the Northern Cape, known as the halfway house for travelers from Cape Town to Gauteng
  • Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State
  • Johannesburg and Pretoria in Gauteng
  • Polokwane, Makhado and Musina in the Limpopo Province

Polokwane
The capital of Limpopo Province is a modern town and the central hub of the North. The distance to Johannesburg is 300km and the border to Zimbabwe is only 230km further North.
Polokwane is known for its nice climate. It is situated 1.312m above sea level on highest point of a plateau. If you are travelling from Polokwane on R71 further East (towards Letaba District) you'll pass the University of the North.

Bakone Malapa Museum
Just South of Polokwane next to the R 37 lies the Bakone Malapa Museum. Here you can get an overview about the life of the Bakone from Matlala in the past and nowadays. This local tribe is part of the Northern Sotho people. Visitors can enjoy an informative guided tour (approx. 1 hour). Bakone Malapa started in 1979. The traditional huts were built according to historical knowledge. Meanwhile seven people are working here. On the poperty archaeological excavations took place to get more information about the people that settled there centuries ago. The first settlers must have bee San people. There rock paintings were found close by. Now research about the life of the Ndebele in the area is being planned.
The open air museum offers an ideal stop for travel
lers on the road from Gauteng to the main attractions of  the Limpopo Province.
