Khorixas is the capital of Damaraland. From here you can only use gravel roads in Northerly, Easterly and Westerly directions. Towards the East you get to the Skeleton Coast and to the Twyfelfontein area, further North you’ll reach Kaokoveld.

The Petrified Forest
The petrified forest is a mere 45 km to the East of Khorixas. The surface of the forest is about 300 x 800 m. Some petrified tree-trunks are up to 30 m.

Further East you will reach the mountains of Twyfelfontein, some 100 km from Khorixas. The biggest concentration of San paintings and engravings in Southern Africa can be experienced here. They are supposed to be approximately 6000 years old (the oldest paintings are an estimated 25.000 – 28.000 years old!). Nearby you can visit the Organ Pipes and the Burnt Mountain.
